FIFA 21 will not allow you to play between different consoles, not even between different generations of the same manufacturer. Electronic Arts confirms the news on the official FIFA Direct account in response to a question from players: "If I buy PS5 but my friend is still on PS4, will I be able to play #FUT cooperatively? (Same question for Xbox Series X and Xbox One)". The answer leaves no room for doubt: "You will not be able to play between console generations or cross-play in FIFA 21. However, you will be able to take your FUT progress from PS4 to PS5, and from Xbox One to Xbox Series X."
Cross-play has long been allowed to unite console, PC and mobile users, although the different strategies with each game and publisher make it still not very common, especially among large blockbusters. It is more common instead among free games, where the size of the community is key to its long-term success. In EA's case, Need for Speed Heat was the publisher's first game to receive cross-play through an update.
Sports games are currently the ones that most limit the update options to make the jump from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X. In FIFA 21 this update will be free, but the promotion is valid until the launch of FIFA 22. Also, buyers should know that this is only valid for consoles of the new generation with an optical disc drive (PS5 Digital Edition does not have it, and neither Xbox Series S).
In the new consoles, FIFA 21 will greatly reduce loading times thanks to the SSD units, there will be a new delayed and dynamic lighting system to give more realism to the game, players with more physical detail in faces, hair, and equipment. The PC version will be based on the Xbox One and PS4 version.
